Description

MICS is a non-profit organization that has been conducting long-
term studies on blue, fin, minke, and humpback whales in the Mingan Archipelago for over thirty years. Participating in a day trip at sea with our researchers gives you the chance to experience field research first-hand and to meet individual whales, some of whom we have known for over 20 years. As we encounter cetaceans in their natural habitat, MICS researchers will share their knowledge, acquired through more than 25 years of fieldwork in the St. Lawrence, of the species encountered. You can experience our photo-identification, biopsy, acoustic, and behavioural data collection techniques.
    Itinerary and Equipment

We meet every morning at 7:30 am at the Mingan dock, 8 km (~5mi) from our research station. Most of our trips last an average of 6 hours. They can sometimes be shorter (4 to 5 hours) depending on the evolution of the weather in the morning, or longer (last to 12 hours ), depending on  distribution and numbers of animals.
The decision to go out is taken by captains early in the morning, considering the observed conditions and the marine weather forecast from Environment Canada
. Be sure to bring sunblock for your skin and lips, sunglasses to protect your eyes, warm clothing, a camera, binoculars, and a good meal with plenty to drink. We will provide you with an exposure suit.
